Painting Pet Portraits in Watercolor, Oil, Acrylic, or Gouache

Instructor: Glenn Cernosek

Ages: 16+

Class Description:

Learn to paint pet portraits, step-by-step, from photo reference. Cernosek will demonstrate his approach and guide you as you paint your pet or paint the same pet as Cernosek. You can then use this approach for painting your pet. You will also learn the secrets of the old masters to draw the subject more accurately on your painting surface.

Each day, Cernosek will demonstrate each step and then pause as the students will complete that step in capturing a realistic likeness.

If you are painting your own pet, you will need an 8” x 10” photo of your pet. The image needs to be sharp and show the patterns and direction of hair growth. If you choose to paint the same subject as Cernosek, he will provide you with the sharp photo, as well as another copy to use for drawing and a transfer sheet to get the image on your painting surface.

When: May 28th - 30th, 2022, 9:30am - 4:30pm (one hour lunch break)

Where: 10000 Research Blvd Suite #141, Austin, TX 78759 (next to Hanara Sushi and Amy’s Ice Creams)

What to bring: Students will be required to bring their own supplies. A supply list will be emailed to you after registering.

Cost: $395 (No refunds within 48 hours before the start of class time)

About the Instructor

Artist Glenn Cernosek.

Glenn Cernosek currently lives in the Austin, Texas area. He has been painting for the past 45 years and specializes in realistic pet portraits and tropical painting. All of his paintings are in a photorealistic style. He chooses to paint in a realistic style because he enjoys painting detail; it puts him in a meditative state while painting. He believes that all the detail gives the viewer more to look at.

Cernosek paints primarily in watercolor and gouache but occasionally in oil. Workshop participants can paint with transparent watercolor with white gouache or all gouache or acrylic if you are experienced with acrylics. You can see his paintings on the web at www.CERNOSEK.com.

Five of his tropical watercolor paintings have been featured on the sets of the CBS TV series: Hawaii-5-0 and Magnum, P.I. One of his oil paintings, "1851 Colt Navy Revolver" is featured in an exhibit at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, Texas.

Cernosek has exhibited his paintings in many art competitions, including:

  • 2021 Dolores Price Award - 51st Annual Watercolor Society of South Texas Exhibition

  • 2017 12th Juried International Guild of Realism for an oil painting

  • 2016, 1992 & 1988 International Exhibition - Watercolor Art Society - Houston
