Artists-in-residence Russell Brxwn and Fabian Rey present “CHANGES”, the culmination of their individual works and collaborations from the six month residency hosted by Pump Project and Almost Real Things. CHANGES explores both the physical influence their work has had on each other while simultaneously expressing the changes in current events that took place during the duration of the residency. In their work, both artists straddle the boundaries of identity, politics, personal coping, consumerism, and everyday life in American culture.

Russell Brxwn is an Austin based visual and installation artist from Los Angeles, CA. Since attending school at Pierce College and Otis Art Institute in LA, Russell moved to Austin to pursue an active practice. Russell moved to Austin in 2016, and has exhibited at his studio at Pump Project for East Austin Studio Tour, been a guest artist in West Austin Studio Tour, and collaborated on several group shows in both Austin and LA. He is the recipient of Pump Project/ART’s 2019 Residency program ending with a duo-solo exhibition at Cloud Tree Studios & Gallery. Russell’s work incorporates patterning lines he refers to as TWIGS. With identity, pop culture, literature, and composition still at the foreground of his mind, Russell explores controversial topics with his installation work to push the boundaries of society.

Fabian Rey was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He started painting as a kid, under his father’s instruction, and continued his education at Franc Cervoni’s studio and Arte School of Florence, Italy. He also studied Art Direction in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Soon after college Fabian joined Lopito, Ileana & Howie Inc., an advertising agency, where he worked as a Creative Director. After a couple of years in advertising, he started working with X-Films, a production house, where he directed TV commercials and videos. His work has been awarded at the New York Film Festival, Cannes Lions Festival, Festival Cúspide, Rincón International Film Festival, 48hrs Film Project and Se Habla Español – Awards in Communications Excellence, among others. He has showcased his work individually and collectively in galleries and alternative art spaces. He’s currently working as a freelance artist and muralist in Austin, Texas. Fabian is a recipient of the recipient of Pump Project/ART’s 2019 Residency program ending with a duo-solo exhibition at Cloud Tree Studios & Gallery. His paintings and photographs are rooted in place and culture. His desire to encompass an attitude or way of life drives messages, imagery and background.

Cloud Tree Studios & Gallery is located in East Austin in a vintage Quonset hut built in 1948. It has been a workshop to wood artist and manager of the space, Brian David Johnson since 2016. Prior to 2016, Beaman Metal Company operated out of the row of huts since the mid 70’s. Additional studios and a woodshop house local artists working in various mediums that contribute to the creative energy of the space.

This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. Visit Austin at Sponsors include Firestone Brewery and The Roadie ATX.
