Kintsugi-Golden Repair Workshop with Preeti Agrawal

Date: Saturday, May 10th

Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Class Description: In this 2-hour workshop, participants will engage in the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi —an art of mending broken pottery with gold. This technique goes beyond restoration, embracing the philosophy of celebrating imperfections and resilience. Each participant will repair their own broken pottery, while connecting with the deeper meaning of finding beauty in flaws and strength through the healing process.

Topics Covered: The workshop will begin with an introduction to the Kintsugi art form, including a brief overview of its history and significance.Instead of using traditional kintsugi lacquer, we will be using special epoxy for the repair process. Epoxy is not only easier to work with, but it also cures much faster, making the entire process more efficient. I will then demonstrate the technique, highlighting common mistakes and how to avoid them. Following the demonstration, participants will choose a project from a selection provided and begin working on their own piece. Throughout the workshop, I will offer personalized guidance, demonstrating how to approach the unique challenges of each individual project as participants work on their own creations.

Materials Needed: All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Meet the Instructor:

I am Preeti Agrawal, a passionate Austin-based watercolor artist, avid crafter and social media blogger. While I enjoy painting many subjects, I find my passion in painting antique objects and ancient Indian Madhubani form of art. When I’m not painting, I like to sew, craft with crepe paper and wood, or upcycle the old into the new. I feel that in recent times, the value of handmade goods have diminished, and I hope to bring the art of hand making back. This is part of the reason I started my craft blog three years ago, where I upload DIY tutorials of crafts that anyone can make. My passion for up cycling and repurposing materials led me to teach several workshops at Austin Creative Reuse, a local nonprofit focused on creativity through sustainability.
